Mental Health Counseling

Mental Health Counseling: People seek counseling because they are in distress and are seeking support and answers. Counseling isn’t a cure-all. But for the types of emotional strain that many people face their entire lives — depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and many others — counseling offers the possibility not only to alleviate pain, but the opportunity to live a richer and more fulfilling life.

As a practitioner of existential psychology my goal is to enter into a positive and collaborative relationship with clients where they can work through their issues by drawing on their own strengths and values. Some methods and practices I use are:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a form of behavioral therapy which treats issues by addressing and modifying dysfunctional emotions. CBT is grounded in the understanding that a person’s perceptions of a situation has a greater effect than the situation itself. CBT helps to change unhelpful thinking which distorts perceptions.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI): MI is a counseling approach which is directive and client-centered. MI helps clients explore their ambivalence related to change and works to increase clients’ resolve to adopt positive changes.
  • Positive Psychology: Positive psychology encourages happiness, well-being, and positivity. Positive psychology is not a “Pollyanna” approach to increasing well-being, but an approach which assists clients in identifying and living the values which contribute most to a well-lived and fulfilling life.

Mental Health Counseling Fees: $125.00 for a 50-minute session. Some sliding-scale openings may be available.

(FSA accepted, if in the form of a Visa/Mastercard debit card. Unfortunately, at this time, I do not accept insurance. A super-bill can be provided upon request, if a client wishes to seek reimbursement from their insurance. It is the responsibility of the client to check with their insurance provider if they reimburse.)
