Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
Mental Health Counseling & Life Skills Training:

Mental Health Counseling: Depending on the study, people diagnosed with IDD are three to four times more likely to suffer from mental illness, than those in the typical population. Living with IDD and mental illness can often be difficult to traumatizing. Personal issues may include lack of coping skills, confusion/frustration in social interactions, and feelings of inferiority. People diagnosed with IDD may have fewer friends or social support and people may not always be kind.

My education and work in clinical rehabilitation counseling provides the specialized training, understanding, and empathy to work with clients diagnosed with IDD. I collaborate with clients to tailor treatment plans which highlight their strengths and provide structure for their specific needs.

Mental Health Counseling Fees: $110.00 for a 50-minute session. Some sliding-scale openings may be available.

(FSA accepted, if in the form of a Visa/Mastercard debit card. Unfortunately, at this time, I do not accept insurance. A super-bill can be provided upon request, if a client wishes to seek reimbursement from their insurance. It is the responsibility of the client to check with their insurance provider if they reimburse.)

Life Skills Training: Like the majority of people, people diagnosed with IDD have an inner need to be part of society and to be productive. Symptoms and behaviors related to IDD, though, may make work and relationships difficult to obtain and maintain. Life skills training designed for the needs of individuals and groups diagnosed with IDD can help break down barriers and provide clients with better coping and communication abilities. Life skills training can be incorporated into mental health counseling, or be delivered as psychoeducation short-term training for individuals or groups. Some examples of short-term training topics are:

  • Motivation (how it affects one’s willingness to perform and keep performing)
  • Safety (home and work, commuting, in the community)
  • Stress reduction and self-soothing techniques

Life Skills Training: Individual Fees: $125.00 One-hour session

Team/Group Fees: $50/hr. per person: 3-10 people (minimum 3)
